About Nyanza District

Nyanza District is one of the eight districts that make up the Southern Province. It is widely known as the historical and cultural hub of Rwanda because it was once the seat of the traditional Rwandan monarchy. The district is composed of 10 sectors, 51 cells, and 420 villages, and it plays an important role in preserving the country’s cultural heritage.

The district is home to important historical sites such as the King’s Palace Museum and the Kwigira Museum at Rwesero, Nyamagana Artificial Lake, and Cultural trails, which attract both local and international visitors. Nyanza District has a growing economy based on agriculture, livestock, trade, and tourism. Its strategic focus on cultural tourism and sustainable development aims to position the district as a key destination for visitors interested in Rwanda’s history, traditions, and community life.
